KEY THREATS:

Threat icon Key Musk Ally
Threat icon White Supremacist Ideology
Threat icon Funding The Far Right
Threat icon AI Data Center Explosion

Marc Andreessen may not be as well-known as his associates Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, but he’s one of the most influential tech billionaires of all. After co-founding early web browser company Netscape, which went public and was sold to AOL for $4.2 billion during the dot com bubble, he turned to venture capital, and today his firm Andreessen Horowitz has invested in Silicon Valley giants like AirBnB, Facebook, Coinbase, and SpaceX.

Once a major Democratic fundraiser, Andreessen became a top Trump supporter in 2024, and as of May 2026 had spent $115 million boosting Republicans and Democrats this year alone, making him one of the biggest midterm donors as of that date. In 2024, he told Joe Rogan his switch to Trump was because the Biden administration “tried to kill crypto, and they were on their way to trying to kill AI.” But in truth, Andreessen’s far right actions reach far beyond his narrow business interests to deepening engagement in culture war-making; he has, for instance, criticized academic institutions for perceived racial bias against white people, saying in a leaked chat that included high-ranking Trump officials: “My cohort of citizens was told that we just had to put up with this as a cost of prior American bigotry, even though the discrimination was now aimed at us” and followed with “Now my people are furious and not going to take it anymore.” He also hired MAGA cause célèbre Daniel Penny after he was acquitted of negligent homicide charges for choking a mentally ill man to death on a New York City subway.

Linked To

Elon Musk

Andreessen Horowitz has invested hundreds of millions in SpaceX, xAI, and backed Musk’s takeover of Twitter. Andreessen interviewed and identified candidates for DOGE.

Donald Trump

Andreessen Horowitz and its cofounders have poured millions into Trump’s campaign and aligned PACs, including $12 million to Trump’s super PAC MAGA Inc. Andreessen himself donated $4.5 million to the Trump affiliated Right for America PAC. Andreessen was later appointed to the Defense Policy Board of the Department of War, and to a committee advising the Federal Reserve chairman on economic policy related to tech and AI.

Sam Altman

Andreessen Horowitz is an investor in OpenAI, and both Andreessen and Altman are investors in Próspera, a for-profit semi-autonomous “startup city”/special economic zone on an island in Honduras operating under its chosen regulatory framework that has been called a “corporate monarchy.” In 2025, OpenAI President Greg Brockman and Andreessen Horowitz invested $100 million in a Super PAC to support AI-friendly politicians.

Mark Zuckerberg

Andreessen sits on the board of directors of Meta, the Zuckerberg-led parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The two have been co-defendants in a lawsuit against Meta directors.

Controversies

  • Became the subject of widespread mockery when he claimed to practice “zero” introspection. He falsely stated that reflecting on one’s own actions was a modern invention, saying “If you go back, like, 400 years ago, it never would have occurred to anybody to be introspective.”
  • Openly expresses disdain for ordinary people, saying in an interview with Quartz in 2012 that “the idea of the middle class itself is a myth.” According to New York Magazine, he has also said people with a high-school education earning college-level wages threatens modern economic growth. He also said of small town America (including his home state of Wisconsin) according to author Rick Perlstein, something to the effect of “glad there’s OxyContin and video games to keep those people quiet” at a dinner in 2017. Perlstein published the statement in the American Prospect in 2024, but when the statement resurfaced on social media in 2025, Andreessen denied it. Further Andreessen later told Joe Rogan that unlike humans, AI “never gets drunk, never gets sick, never gets high" and never files "HR complaints."
  • Sued alongside current and former Meta Platforms directors and officers by Meta shareholders and pension funds for failing to abide by FTC regulations regarding user data resulting in billions in FTC fines in 2019. Meta’s officers and directors ultimately settled for $190 million.
  • Facebook shareholders sued Facebook in 2016 over a stock reclassification plan. In that lawsuit, it was alleged that Andreessen backchannelled with CEO Mark Zuckerberg to coach him on how to move a stock reclassification plan forward with a committee on which Andreessen served. Facebook settled the lawsuit before trial and abandoned the plan to reclassify shares.
  • Following the Indian government’s determination that a Facebook internet program was illegal, Andreessen, who sits on the board of Meta, sparked backlash when he tweeted “Anti-colonialism has been economically catastrophic for the Indian people for decades. Why stop now?" After facing criticism, Andreessen apologized.
  • Hired Daniel Penny, a Marine veteran who was acquitted of a negligent homicide charge after he choked a mentally ill man to death on a New York City subway. Penny is listed on the Andreessen Horowitz site as a Deal Partner supporting the American Dynamism team.

Obscene Spending

  • Andreessen and his wife Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen spent $255 million on three Malibu beach front homes over the course of six months.
    • In 2021 purchased a sprawling 7-acre compound in Paradise Cove, Malibu for $177 million, at the time the most expensive in California history and second most expensive purchase in the United States. In addition to the main house the estate includes two guest houses, a spa, a cinema, and a swimming pool.
    • In 2022, purchased a second Malibu mansion near Escondido beach for $44.5 million. The property sits just down the street from this 2021 purchase, followed by a third Malibu residence in Paradise Cove adjacent to his 7-acre property for $34 million the same year.

Enabling

Gutting The Government

While less visible in his role than Elon Musk, Andreessen was a key behind-the-scenes figure in the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency. While self-effacingly calling himself an “unpaid intern” of the Musk-led department, Andreessen was involved in everything from recruiting and interviewing DOGE personnel. Andreessen advocated “carv[ing]” down the government’s size and scope, ending remote work for federal workers, and criticized independent regulatory agencies like Securities Exchange Commission, Federal Trade Commission, and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Andreessen has also criticized the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an agency that has been heavily involved in reining in tech industries, particularly crypto, which he has invested over $7.5 billion in, along with $47.5 million in funding to the Fairshake crypto SuperPAC network. In an interview with Joe Rogan, Andreessen railed against the CFPB saying that its role was to “terrorize finance, terrorize financial institutions, prevent fintech, prevent new competition, new startups that want to compete with the big banks.” Now under the Trump Administration the CFPB has been gutted with many standing investigations (including those into companies backed by Andreessen) have been dropped. Despite his distaste for regulation, Andreessen himself now serves on government boards. He was appointed to the Defense Policy Board of the Department of War where he will advise on national security issues and was also appointed to a committee advising the Federal Reserve chairman on economic policy related to tech and AI.

AI Data Centers

Andreessen is a major AI investor and evangelist who has spent millions to move the needle on AI legislation. Following the 2024 election Andreessen Horowitz helped found Leading the Future, a super PAC focused on electing pro-AI legislators from both parties, and kicked off the PAC with a $50 million donation. It has also heavily invested in the companies at the core of the AI data center buildout such as OpenAI, Meta, and xAI.

Andreessen claims that AI is so powerful that it may replace most jobs except one: his own. He says “it is possible that [venture capital] is quite literally timeless. And when, you know, when the AI is doing everything else, that may be one of the last remaining fields that people are still doing.”
